Fresh Truck Mobile Farmers Market

The FRESH Truck Mobile Farmers Market is an innovative way to tackle the accessibility to locally grown fruits and vegetables on four wheels in Suffolk and Nassau County. The market uses a retro-fitted donated mini-bus donated by Suffolk Transportation to serve the under-resourced populations across Long Island with produce from Smile Farms, FREEdom Farm, and local farmers. It is the only Mobile Market on Long Island enrolled in the NYS Farmers’ Market Nutrition Program (FMNP).

Family Residences and Essential Enterprise Inc. (FREE) in collaboration with Northwell Health’s DSRIP, Smile Farms and Cornell Cooperative Extension of Suffolk County served these sites with a Mobile Farmer’s Market (MFM) from June 24th through end of October.

The Fresh Truck Mobile Farmers Market accepts EBT, WIC/Senior FMNP vouchers, Fresh Connect coupons, major credit cards and cash.

The mobile market launched in the summer of 2018 and served 350 families. The patrons learned to try new fruits and vegetables, and how to prepare low cost nutritious meals/snacks for themselves and/or family. At every stop the Fresh Truck Mobile Farmers Market make, we have an Eat Smart NY (ESNY) Nutrition Educator providing recipe sampling, recipe book, and tip sheets on how to eat and cook the vegetables on the truck that day.

Visitor/Volunteer Counter:

  • The FRESH TRUCK had 350 visitors in the 2018 season
  • Each of the 6 stops had 2-6 volunteers on each scheduled day
  • Over 100 patrons were re-occurring

2019 Season will have 12 stops throughout Suffolk and Nassau County.

The vehicle is a work training site for individuals with different abilities, who are part of FREE’s Pathways to Employment.
